About GHG Protocol
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) is a globally acknowledged standard for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions / carbon footprint.
Greenhouse Gas Protocol provides carbon accounting and reporting standards, sector guidance, calculation tools and trainings for businesses and local and national governments.
GHG Protocol takes into account six greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PCFs), and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).

Global impact
"The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (also commonly referred to as the GHG Protocol) is the main global standard for public and private sector entities to measure greenhouse gas emissions / carbon emissions. Its standards apply to operations, value chains, and climate change mitigation actions."
What are the different scopes in carbon footprint calculation?
When measuring and tracking Carbon emissions / GHG emissions, companies have to outline the scope of emissions they refer to in their reports. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol categorizes emissions into Scope 1 (direct emissions from owned or controlled sources), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy), and Scope 3 (all other indirect emissions occurring in a company’s value chain).
The GHG Protocol devised this system of scope-based classification to subdivide the direct and indirect sources of emissions for businesses. In fact, the GHG Protocol is most well-known for its creation of these GHG emissions scopes (Carbon Emissions Scopes).
Scope 1 (Direct Emissions)
Scope 1 emissions are “direct emissions” from sources that are owned or controlled by the company.

Scope 2 (Indirect Emissions)
Scope 2 emissions are the emissions released into the atmosphere from the use of purchased energy.
Scope 3 emissions include all other indirect emissions that occur across the value chain and are outside of the organisation’s direct control.
Scope 3 (Other Indirect Emissions)

Comprehensive GHG framework / Carbon Protocol to measure and manage greenhouse gas emissions/carbon footprint/carbon emissions for all sectors and operations.

1. Plan the GHG inventory compilation activities
Review GHG accounting standards and methods for organizational reporting.
Determine organizational and operational boundaries.
Choose a base year.
Consider 3rd party verification.

2. Measure GHG emissions / GHG Accounting / GHG Calculation
Identify data requirements and preferred methods for data collection.
Develop data collection procedures, tools, and guidance materials.
Compile and review facility data (e.g., electricity, natural gas).
Estimate missing data to fill gaps.
Choose emissions factors.
Calculate emissions.

4. Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero Goals
Finalize data.
Complete third-party verification (optional).
Report data as needed.
Prepare to set a publicly reported GHG target and track progress.
3. Set a GHG Emission Reduction Target and Track and Report Progress
Achieve carbon neutrality through effective GHG reporting and management strategies tailored for your organisation.
